El Dorado Hills' air quality benefits from the Sierra Nevada foothills position at 478 metres east of Sacramento, with vehicle emissions from US-50 the primary local source. The higher elevation provides better dispersal than the Sacramento Valley floor, while summer wildfire smoke from surrounding Sierra Nevada foothill forests is an increasingly severe seasonal concern and the foothills position generally escapes the worst of the Sacramento Valley's tule fog winter inversion episodes on most days.

Like most US cities, El Dorado Hills sees air quality shift from season to season. Typically, the shortest stretch of clean air usually falls in the wetter winter months, while summer and early autumn bring the highest ozone levels, and wildfire smoke can spike particulate readings sharply from August through October. The mountains ringing the basin can trap pollution close to the ground for days when winds are calm.

Are air quality levels in El Dorado Hills based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
