Colton's air quality reflects the Inland Empire basin's severe topographic enclosure in San Bernardino County, with vehicle emissions from I-215 and I-10 and the surrounding BNSF and UP railroad intermodal yards and logistics corridor generating concentrated diesel freight PM2.5. The San Bernardino Mountains to the north and the Jurupa Hills to the south create topographic concentration, while the persistent basin inversion traps the combined vehicle and freight emissions and Colton's industrial rail corridor position consistently produces elevated readings throughout the year.

In short, winter rains provide the only real relief from an otherwise persistent haze, whereas summer sunshine and heat drive some of the worst ozone readings in the country. Coastal breezes offer some relief compared to inland valley locations that see heavier smog buildup.
Are air quality levels in Colton based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
