Chino Hills' air quality reflects the Pomona Valley and Chino Valley's enclosed position in the Inland Empire basin, with vehicle emissions from SR-71 the primary local source. The San Jose Hills and Chino Hills themselves create interesting topographic variation within the broader basin, but the persistent basin inversion still concentrates emissions and Chino Hills' hillside position provides only marginally better conditions than the flat Chino Valley floor below.

When is air pollution at its worst in Chino Hills?

Like most US cities, Chino Hills sees air quality shift from season to season. Typically, winter rains provide the only real relief from an otherwise persistent haze, while summer and early autumn bring the highest ozone levels, and wildfire smoke can spike particulate readings sharply from August through October. The mountains ringing the basin can trap pollution close to the ground for days when winds are calm.

Are air quality levels in Chino Hills based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
