Billings's air quality reflects the Yellowstone River valley's partial topographic enclosure between the Rimrocks sandstone cliffs to the north and the Beartooth foothills to the south, with vehicle emissions from I-90 and the CHS Refinery — Montana's largest petroleum refinery — generating industrial SO₂ and PM2.5 alongside the primary vehicle sources. Winter temperature inversions in the valley can trap refinery and vehicle emissions under persistent cold-air pools, while summer wildfire smoke from the surrounding Montana and Wyoming forests is an increasingly frequent seasonal concern.

Valley and basin locations are especially prone to these winter inversion episodes compared to more exposed, higher terrain.

Are air quality levels in Billings based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
