Bend's air quality reflects the High Desert Deschutes River basin between the Cascade Range and Ochoco Mountains, with vehicle emissions from US-97 contributing the primary local sources. Summer wildfire smoke from the surrounding Oregon Cascade forests is an increasingly severe and frequent seasonal concern, while winter wood-burning stoves generate localised PM2.5 against an otherwise generally clean high-desert background.
