Abu Dhabi's air quality reflects the UAE Arabian Gulf coastal position on the flat Abu Dhabi island and mainland, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the petroleum extraction, government, and construction corridor generating elevated PM2.5. Windblown Arabian Desert and Rub' al Khali dust generates elevated PM10 during shamal wind events, while the Arabian Gulf's sea breezes provide coastal ventilation and the extraordinary desert dust transport combined with construction and vehicle emissions maintains moderate to elevated UAE capital city readings throughout the year.
