Istanbul's air quality reflects the Bosphorus Strait's unique position between Europe and Asia, with vehicle traffic on the TEM and O-1 motorways and the extraordinary Bosphorus maritime traffic generating elevated SO₂ and NOₓ from shipping alongside the dense metropolitan vehicle fleet. The Bosphorus wind corridor provides ventilation on most days, while the surrounding Trakya and Anatolian plateau create topographic variation and Istanbul's industrial western Trakya corridor contributes persistent background pollution throughout the year.
