Taichung's air quality reflects the Taichung Basin's partial topographic enclosure between the Central Mountain Range and the Hsueshan Range, with vehicle traffic on the National Freeway and the surrounding Taichung industrial port and manufacturing corridor contributing elevated PM2.5 and NOₓ. Northeast monsoon winds provide winter ventilation, while the basin topography concentrates emissions under calm conditions and Taichung consistently records among Taiwan's more challenged air quality readings compared to the windward northern and southern coastal cities.
