Kaohsiung's air quality reflects the Taiwan southern coastal industrial plain's Gaoping River delta position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the petroleum refining, petrochemical, and steel corridor generating elevated industrial SO₂ and PM2.5. Consistent Taiwan Strait and South China Sea breezes provide maritime ventilation, while the Zhongyang Mountain range creates partial topographic enclosure to the east and Kaohsiung generally maintains moderate to elevated Taiwan southern industrial metropolitan readings throughout most of the year.
