Damascus's air quality reflects the enclosed Syrian Anti-Lebanon Mountain basin at 690 metres, with vehicle traffic on the surrounding ring roads and the extraordinary vehicle density, industrial operations, and ongoing conflict-related infrastructure damage generating elevated PM2.5 and PM10. The Anti-Lebanon Range and Qasioun Mountain create significant topographic enclosure, while windblown Syrian Desert dust from the eastern steppe contributes severe PM10 episodes and the conflict's destruction of industrial and energy infrastructure has created additional uncontrolled emission sources throughout the year.
