Utrera's air quality reflects the lower Guadalquivir plain south of Seville, with vehicle traffic on the A-92 and surrounding agricultural, food processing, and equestrian operations contributing local sources. The Guadalquivir valley's channelling of Atlantic westerlies provides ventilation, while summer heat drives ozone formation and calm anticyclonic conditions allow vehicle and agricultural emissions to accumulate across the flat Sevillian agricultural plain under summer anticyclonic conditions throughout the warm season.

When is air pollution at its worst in Utrera?

What time of year has the cleanest air in Utrera? December through February is often the toughest stretch, driven by temperature inversions that keep exhaust and heating smoke from dispersing on still days. Spring generally sees a gradual recovery, driven by more frequent rain showers and stronger breezes that prevent pollutants from settling. Summer can bring periodic wildfire smoke on top of the usual ozone build-up from intense heat and sunshine. The transition into autumn generally brings cleaner conditions, as more frequent rainfall and lower temperatures curb ozone formation. Southern Spain's high summer temperatures, combined with periodic dust blown in from North Africa, tend to sharpen the seasonal contrasts here.

Are air quality levels in Utrera based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
