Tarragona's air quality faces Spain's most significant combined industrial air quality challenge after Huelva, with the Tarragona petrochemical complex — one of Europe's largest — generating elevated benzene, SO₂, and PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the AP-7. The Mediterranean sea breezes from the Tarragona Bay provide coastal ventilation, but the industrial complex's extraordinary scale means Tarragona records some of Spain's highest industrial emission readings, while the coastal position provides the primary ventilation pathway for the enormous petrochemical cluster.

When is air pollution at its worst in Tarragona?

How does air quality change throughout the year in Tarragona? Winter tends to bring the year's weakest readings, as stagnant, cold air lets heating smoke and vehicle emissions build up rather than clear away. Air quality usually improves through spring, helped by more frequent frontal systems that bring rain and stronger winds to disperse local emissions. Summer's combination of intense sun and high temperatures makes ozone the main concern, occasionally compounded by wildfire smoke during dry, windy spells. Early autumn can still bring warm, stagnant spells before the season's returning rain and wind begin clearing the air. Sea breezes along this stretch of coast generally support air quality, but summer holiday traffic and occasional calima dust events can interrupt that.

Are air quality levels in Tarragona based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
