Segovia's air quality benefits from its elevated Castilian Meseta position at 1,002 metres at the Sierra de Guadarrama foot, with consistent Castilian plateau winds providing generally excellent natural background dispersal. Vehicle traffic on the AP-61 and tourism operations are the primary modest local sources, while the open Meseta and the surrounding Sierra de Guadarrama's clean mountain airflows generally prevent significant pollution accumulation in this UNESCO heritage Roman aqueduct city throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Segovia?
What time of year has the cleanest air in Segovia? Cold, windless spells in December and January are usually when conditions dip most, as heating emissions and traffic fumes accumulate under a stable atmosphere. Spring generally sees a gradual recovery, driven by more frequent rain showers and stronger breezes that prevent pollutants from settling. Summer can bring periodic wildfire smoke on top of the usual ozone build-up from intense heat and sunshine. Conditions generally improve through autumn as cooling temperatures reduce ozone formation and returning rains help disperse remaining pollutants. Inland locations like this typically see harsher winter inversions and hotter summer ozone spikes than areas closer to the coast.
Are air quality levels in Segovia based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
