In Santa Lucía de Tirajana, local traffic and Saharan dust intrusions play the biggest role locally. Levels vary more with Saharan dust events than with local traffic. The trade winds (alisios) usually keep the air remarkably clean between dust episodes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Santa Lucía de Tirajana right now?
On 19 July 2026, overall air quality in Santa Lucía de Tirajana is fair. PM2.5 is the main pollutant at 38.0/100. Pollution peaks around 1:00 PM (PM10: 46.9/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Santa Lucía de Tirajana?
On 20 July 2026, air quality conditions in Santa Lucía de Tirajana will be similar to today, with O3 forecast at fair at 28.6/100. Pollution peaks around 3:00 AM (PM10: 47.4/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Santa Lucía de Tirajana?
How does air quality change throughout the year in Santa Lucía de Tirajana? Air quality is typically at its weakest in December and January, when cold, calm high-pressure spells trap traffic exhaust and wood-smoke close to the ground instead of letting it disperse. Conditions generally start to recover in spring, as increasing wind and rainfall break up the stagnant air masses typical of winter. Summer's intense heat and sunshine create ideal conditions for ozone formation, sometimes overshadowing the lower traffic volumes typical of the season. Autumn generally marks the shift back toward calmer, cleaner conditions as temperatures drop and rainfall becomes more regular. The Canary Islands' subtropical trade-wind climate keeps conditions milder year-round, though Saharan dust intrusions (calima) can arrive at any time of year and briefly dominate.
Are air quality levels in Santa Lucía de Tirajana based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?
Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.
During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
