Roquetas de Mar's air quality reflects its Mediterranean coastal position in Almería province, with consistent sea breezes from the Alboran Sea providing reliable maritime ventilation. Vehicle traffic on the A-7 and agricultural dust from the surrounding Campo de Dalías plastic greenhouse complex — one of Europe's largest — contribute elevated PM10 from greenhouse operations and nearby Saharan dust intrusions periodically affect the entire southeastern Spanish coast.

When is air pollution at its worst in Roquetas de Mar?

What is the yearly air quality pattern like in Roquetas de Mar? December through February is often the toughest stretch, driven by temperature inversions that keep exhaust and heating smoke from dispersing on still days. March through May tends to see steady improvement, with more unsettled weather patterns helping disperse traffic and heating pollution. Summer's combination of intense sun and high temperatures makes ozone the main concern, occasionally compounded by wildfire smoke during dry, windy spells. Air quality usually improves through autumn, as returning rains and cooling temperatures wash out summer's ozone and dust build-up. Being close to North Africa, this area is more exposed to Saharan dust intrusions, which can add to the seasonal pattern described above.

Are air quality levels in Roquetas de Mar based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
