In Playa Blanca, port and shipping activity and Saharan dust intrusions are the main local influences on air quality. Levels vary more with Saharan dust events than with local traffic. The trade winds (alisios) usually keep the air remarkably clean between dust episodes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Playa Blanca right now?
On 19 July 2026, overall air quality in Playa Blanca is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 38.9/100. Pollution peaks around 2:00 AM (PM10: 38.9/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Playa Blanca?
On 20 July 2026, air quality conditions in Playa Blanca will be similar to today, with PM2.5 forecast at fair at 37.4/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 AM (PM10: 42.0/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Playa Blanca?
When is air quality typically worst in Playa Blanca? Air quality often reaches its yearly low in the depths of winter, when still, cold air holds local emissions from traffic and heating close to ground level. The transition into spring usually brings cleaner air, as more frequent rain and wind reduce the buildup of local pollution. Hot, stagnant summer air favours ozone formation, and dry vegetation nearby occasionally adds wildfire smoke to the mix during peak heat. Autumn usually sees a steady return to cleaner conditions as the ozone-favouring heat of summer fades and rainfall picks up. Here, the steady trade winds generally keep air quality stable across the year, aside from periodic calima events that bring dust from the Sahara.
Are air quality levels in Playa Blanca based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?
Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.
During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
