Icod de los Vinos's air quality is shaped mostly by Saharan dust intrusions and local traffic. Air quality is usually good, but can deteriorate sharply during dust episodes. Air quality can shift dramatically within a single day when a calima arrives.

When is air pollution at its worst in Icod de los Vinos?
Does air quality in Icod de los Vinos vary by season? Winter tends to bring the year's weakest readings, as stagnant, cold air lets heating smoke and vehicle emissions build up rather than clear away. March through May tends to see steady improvement, with more unsettled weather patterns helping disperse traffic and heating pollution. The long, hot days of summer favour ozone build-up, which can spike on the stillest, sunniest afternoons. Early autumn can still bring warm, stagnant spells before the season's returning rain and wind begin clearing the air. Being closest to the Sahara, these islands see calima dust events more often than any other part of Spain, on top of an otherwise mild, trade-wind climate.
Are air quality levels in Icod de los Vinos based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?
Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.
During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
