Huelva's air quality faces Spain's most significant industrial air quality challenge, with the Polo Químico de Huelva petrochemical and phosphate fertiliser complex generating some of Spain's highest industrial SO₂, fluoride, and PM2.5 concentrations alongside the Rio Tinto copper mining legacy. Atlantic westerlies from the Gulf of Cádiz generally provide maritime ventilation, but the industrial complex's scale and the enclosed Odiel-Tinto estuary topography make Huelva consistently Spain's most industrially impacted urban air quality environment throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Huelva right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Huelva is fair. PM2.5 is the main pollutant at 20.2/100. Pollution peaks around 6:00 PM (O3: 44.7/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Huelva?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Huelva will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at fair at 38.5/100. Pollution peaks around 7:00 PM (O3: 38.5/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Huelva?

Does air quality in Huelva vary by season? Air quality is typically at its weakest in December and January, when cold, calm high-pressure spells trap traffic exhaust and wood-smoke close to the ground instead of letting it disperse. Spring is typically a transitional season, as milder, windier weather starts clearing out the pollutants that accumulate during winter's calm spells. Hot, dry summer conditions favour ozone formation, so afternoon readings can rise even when traffic and heating pollution are otherwise low. As autumn progresses, cooler temperatures and more frequent rain tend to bring air quality back toward its yearly average. The region's intense heat and its exposure to Saharan dust crossing the Strait mean conditions here can swing sharply from the seasonal norm.

Are air quality levels in Huelva based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
