Colmenar Viejo's air quality benefits from its elevated northern Madrid sierra position at 877 metres in the Monte de El Pardo foothills, with the Sierra de Guadarrama's clean northwesterly airflows providing generally better conditions than the central Madrid basin. Vehicle traffic on the M-607 national road is the primary local source, while the elevated mountain position and the surrounding El Pardo woodland park generally help avoid the worst of Madrid's winter temperature inversion accumulation throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Colmenar Viejo?

How does air quality change throughout the year in Colmenar Viejo? Air quality often reaches its yearly low in the depths of winter, when still, cold air holds local emissions from traffic and heating close to ground level. Spring generally sees a gradual recovery, driven by more frequent rain showers and stronger breezes that prevent pollutants from settling. Summer readings are shaped mainly by ozone, which builds under strong sun and heat, sometimes worsened by drifting wildfire smoke. Early autumn can still bring warm, stagnant spells before the season's returning rain and wind begin clearing the air. Away from the moderating effect of the sea, this area experiences starker seasonal air quality swings than coastal Spain.

Are air quality levels in Colmenar Viejo based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
