Collado-Villalba's air quality benefits from its elevated position in the Sierra de Guadarrama foothills at 915 metres northwest of Madrid, with clean northwesterly Sierra airflows providing generally better conditions than the central Madrid basin. Vehicle traffic on the A-6 national road is the primary local source, while the elevated mountain position generally helps avoid the worst of Madrid's winter temperature inversion accumulation in the lower metropolitan basin below.

When is air pollution at its worst in Collado-Villalba?

How do the seasons affect air quality in Collado-Villalba? Cold, windless spells in December and January are usually when conditions dip most, as heating emissions and traffic fumes accumulate under a stable atmosphere. Spring generally sees a gradual recovery, driven by more frequent rain showers and stronger breezes that prevent pollutants from settling. Summer readings are shaped mainly by ozone, which builds under strong sun and heat, sometimes worsened by drifting wildfire smoke. Autumn typically starts mild and can still see occasional ozone or dust episodes before rain and cooler temperatures gradually restore cleaner conditions. Away from the moderating effect of the sea, this area experiences starker seasonal air quality swings than coastal Spain.

Are air quality levels in Collado-Villalba based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
