Ciutadella de Menorca's air quality is shaped mostly by light local road traffic and seasonal tourist traffic. Background pollution is low most of the year for an island of this size. Pine forest cover across much of the island helps filter dust from the air.

When is air pollution at its worst in Ciutadella de Menorca?
How do the seasons affect air quality in Ciutadella de Menorca? Winter mornings are frequently the year's most polluted, as fog and calm conditions trap traffic fumes and smoke from wood stoves close to the ground. Conditions tend to ease in spring, as more active weather systems bring the wind and rain needed to disperse ground-level pollution. Hot, dry summer conditions favour ozone formation, so afternoon readings can rise even when traffic and heating pollution are otherwise low. Early autumn can still bring warm, stagnant spells before the season's returning rain and wind begin clearing the air. The Mediterranean coast's sea breezes generally help disperse pollution, though summer tourism traffic and occasional Saharan dust can still push levels up.
Are air quality levels in Ciutadella de Menorca based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?
Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.
During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
