Avilés' air quality faces significant industrial challenges from the surrounding Asturian industrial complex, with the ALCOA aluminium smelter and the former ENSIDESA steel legacy generating elevated PM2.5, fluoride, and SO₂ alongside vehicle traffic on the A-8. The enclosed Avilés estuary's topographic configuration can concentrate industrial plumes under calm conditions, while Atlantic westerlies from the Bay of Biscay provide the primary ventilation and the declining industrial base has progressively improved readings.

When is air pollution at its worst in Avilés?

Does air quality in Avilés vary by season? Winter high-pressure systems tend to produce the year's worst episodes, as still air traps traffic fumes and heating smoke at ground level. Air quality usually improves through spring, helped by more frequent frontal systems that bring rain and stronger winds to disperse local emissions. The heat of summer drives up ozone formation, and dry conditions occasionally bring smoke from regional wildfires into the mix. The first rains of autumn typically help clear out any lingering summer dust or ozone, setting up milder conditions ahead of winter. The Atlantic north's frequent rain and strong onshore winds generally keep year-round levels lower than in the drier interior and south.

Are air quality levels in Avilés based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
