Aranjuez's air quality reflects the Tagus river valley south of Madrid in the Casa Real gardens city, with vehicle traffic on the A-4 national road and the surrounding agricultural and tourism operations contributing local sources. The Tagus valley provides ventilation on Atlantic westerly winds, while the Madrid metropolitan basin's temperature inversion problem can periodically extend southward to affect the Tagus corridor under prolonged winter anticyclonic conditions throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Aranjuez?

How does air quality change throughout the year in Aranjuez? Winter tends to bring the year's weakest readings, as stagnant, cold air lets heating smoke and vehicle emissions build up rather than clear away. Air quality usually improves through spring, helped by more frequent frontal systems that bring rain and stronger winds to disperse local emissions. During summer, strong sunlight and high temperatures accelerate ozone formation, occasionally offsetting the drop in traffic and heating-related emissions. As autumn progresses, cooler temperatures and more frequent rain tend to bring air quality back toward its yearly average. Being inland, this area sees more extreme summer heat and winter cold, which sharpens the seasonal contrast in air quality.

Are air quality levels in Aranjuez based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
