Oudtshoorn's air quality reflects the Klein Karoo basin at the foot of the Swartberg mountains at 325 metres, with vehicle traffic on the N12 and the surrounding ostrich farming and tourism operations contributing local sources in South Africa's ostrich capital. The Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains create significant topographic enclosure, while the Karoo's dry climate contributes dust from surrounding semi-arid agricultural lands and the mountain valley position can concentrate emissions under calm anticyclonic conditions.
