Žilina's air quality reflects the Váh river valley at the western Carpathian foothills in northern Slovakia, with vehicle traffic on the D1 motorway and the Kia automotive manufacturing plant generating industrial and vehicle testing emissions alongside residential wood burning. The surrounding Malá Fatra and Beskydy mountain ridgelines create topographic enclosure, while winter temperature inversions in the Váh valley can concentrate heating and automotive plant emissions significantly.
