Trenčín's air quality reflects the Váh river valley at the White Carpathian foothills in western Slovakia, with vehicle traffic on the D1 motorway and the surrounding manufacturing and military technology industry contributing local sources alongside winter residential wood and coal burning. The surrounding White Carpathians and Trenčín hills create topographic variation, while winter temperature inversions in the Váh valley can concentrate heating and vehicle emissions during extended cold anticyclonic periods throughout the year.
