Riyadh's air quality reflects the Najd plateau's flat Arabian desert basin at 612 metres, with vehicle traffic on the King Fahd Expressway and the surrounding petrochemical and industrial corridor contributing local sources alongside extraordinary vehicle density. Windblown Arabian desert dust generates severe PM10 episodes during shamal wind events, while the flat terrain generally allows reasonable dispersal on calm days and Riyadh's combination of vehicle emissions, industrial background, and desert dust maintains consistently elevated readings throughout the year.
