Rafḩā's air quality reflects the flat northwestern Saudi Arabian Al Hudud ash Shamaliyah plateau at 445 metres adjacent to the Iraq border, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the military, agricultural, and logistics corridor contributing local sources. Windblown Nafud Desert dust generates elevated PM10 during shamal wind events, while the flat desert plateau allows reasonable dispersal on most days and Rafha generally maintains moderate to elevated northwestern Saudi Arabian border plateau readings throughout most of the year.
