Az Zulfī's air quality reflects the flat Saudi Arabian Najd plateau's agricultural oasis position at 763 metres north of Riyadh, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the date farming, poultry, and agricultural corridor contributing local sources. Windblown Najd Desert dust generates elevated PM10 during dust storm events, while the flat plateau allows reasonable dispersal and Az Zulfi generally maintains moderate to elevated central Saudi Arabian Najd plateau readings throughout most of the year.

Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher. Such events are most common in the drier shoulder seasons.

Are air quality levels in Az Zulfī based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
