Al Mubarraz's air quality reflects the Saudi Arabian Eastern Province Al-Ahsa oasis position adjacent to Al Hofuf, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the oil processing, government, and construction corridor contributing local sources. Windblown Arabian Desert dust generates elevated PM10 during shamal wind events, while the flat desert terrain generally allows reasonable dispersal and Al Mubarraz generally maintains moderate to elevated Eastern Province oasis corridor readings throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Al Mubarraz?

Al Mubarraz usually sees its poorest air quality when traffic on the surrounding roads, heavy industrial and chemical processing, together with construction dust coincide with periods when dry, windy weather picks up. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher. This is most noticeable during spring and autumn wind events.

Are air quality levels in Al Mubarraz based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
