Al Kharj's air quality reflects the flat Saudi Arabian Najd plateau's agricultural oasis position at 429 metres south of Riyadh, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the Saudi military base, agricultural, and government corridor contributing local sources. Windblown Najd Desert dust generates elevated PM10 during dust storm events, while the flat plateau allows reasonable dispersal and Al Kharj generally maintains moderate to elevated central Saudi Arabian Najd plateau readings throughout most of the year.

Are air quality levels in Al Kharj based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
