Rostov's air quality reflects the flat Russian Don River delta position at 75 metres adjacent to the Sea of Azov, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the agricultural processing, manufacturing, and vehicle density corridor generating elevated PM2.5. The Sea of Azov provides limited maritime ventilation, while winter anticyclonic inversions concentrate heating and industrial emissions and Rostov generally maintains moderate to elevated Russian southern Don River capital readings throughout the winter months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Rostov right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Rostov is medium. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 43.4/100. Pollution peaks around 5:00 PM (O3: 43.4/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Rostov?

Rostov usually sees its poorest air quality when vehicle traffic, textile and manufacturing operations, as well as farming and agricultural processing coincide with periods when dry spells bring strong winds. Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels. Maritime airflow normally ventilates the area well, though calmer spells let levels rise.

Are air quality levels in Rostov based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
