Moscow's air quality reflects the flat East European Plain's Moscow River valley at 156 metres, with vehicle traffic on the MKAD ring road and the extraordinary vehicle density, manufacturing, and heating corridor generating elevated PM2.5 and NOₓ. Winter anticyclonic inversions concentrate heating and vehicle emissions extensively, while summer wildfire smoke from surrounding Russian forests creates acute seasonal episodes throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Moscow right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Moscow is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 21.4/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 AM (NO2: 21.4/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Moscow?

When is air pollution at its worst in Moscow?
Moscow usually sees its poorest air quality when road traffic, manufacturing and food processing, as well as charcoal and wood-burning coincide with periods when calm, stagnant conditions settle in the surrounding valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. Coal and wood used for winter heating add substantially to particulate levels.
Are air quality levels in Moscow based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
