Târgu Jiu's air quality reflects the Jiu river valley in the Oltenia subcarpathians, with vehicle traffic on the E79 and the surrounding coal mining and thermoelectric power station legacy of the Oltenia Energy Complex generating elevated SO₂ and industrial PM2.5. The surrounding Parâng, Vâlcan, and Mehedinți mountains create topographic enclosure, while winter inversions concentrate power station and heating emissions across the enclosed Jiu valley throughout the year.
