Slatina's air quality faces challenges from the ALRO aluminium smelter, one of Romania's largest industrial operations generating elevated fluoride, SO₂, and PM2.5 in the Olt river valley of Oltenia. The Olt valley's partial topographic enclosure and winter residential heating compound the industrial smelter's emissions, while the flat Wallachian plain to the south provides better dispersal on southerly wind days and the aluminium operations represent Slatina's most distinctive and persistent local air quality challenge.
