Sighetu Marmaţiei owes much of its air quality variation to residential wood-burning trapped by the mountain basin, compounded by its position in the Maramureș basin near the Ukrainian border. The surrounding Maramureş terrain can either help disperse or trap these emissions depending on the weather, with active, breezy conditions generally bringing the clearest air.
