Sibiu's air quality reflects its position in the Cibin river valley in the Transylvanian plateau at 415 metres, with vehicle traffic on the A1 Transylvania motorway and the surrounding automotive and manufacturing industry — including a major Continental tyre plant — contributing elevated NOₓ and industrial PM2.5. The surrounding Carpathian highlands and the Transylvanian plateau ridgelines create topographic variation, while winter temperature inversions in the Cibin valley can concentrate heating and manufacturing emissions under calm anticyclonic conditions.
