Sfântu-Gheorghe's air quality reflects the Olt river valley in the eastern Transylvanian basin at 525 metres surrounded by the Carpathian mountains, with vehicle traffic on the E574 and surrounding manufacturing industry contributing local sources alongside winter residential wood and coal burning. The Carpathian highlands create significant topographic enclosure, while winter inversions in the enclosed Transylvanian basin concentrate heating and vehicle emissions and summer conditions are considerably better with mountain breezes providing effective ventilation.
