Satu Mare's air quality reflects the Someș river valley in northwestern Romania at the Hungarian border, with vehicle traffic on the E671 and surrounding manufacturing and agricultural processing industry contributing local sources. Winter residential wood and coal burning generates elevated PM2.5, while the flat Pannonian plain to the west provides reasonable dispersal on most wind days and the Carpathian foothills to the east create topographic variation throughout the year.
