Pitești's air quality reflects its position in the Argeș river valley in the southern Carpathian foothills of Wallachia, with the Dacia (Renault) automotive manufacturing plant — Romania's largest employer — and vehicle traffic on the A1 Bucharest motorway generating industrial and vehicle emissions. The surrounding Carpathian foothills create partial topographic enclosure, while the Wallachian plain to the south provides better dispersal on southerly wind days and winter temperature inversions concentrate automotive plant and heating emissions across the enclosed Argeș valley.
