Hunedoara's air quality faces significant challenges from the Arcelor Mittal Hunedoara steelworks legacy in the Cerna river valley, with historical steel manufacturing generating elevated heavy metals and industrial PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the DN68A in this iron-rich Transylvanian mining corridor. The surrounding Apuseni and Retezat mountain ranges create topographic enclosure, while winter inversions concentrate steel plant and heating emissions and the industrial legacy maintains elevated background metal particulate levels.
