Giurgiu's air quality reflects the Danube river crossing position in southern Romania opposite Ruse Bulgaria, with vehicle traffic on the A2 motorway and the surrounding port and industrial operations contributing local sources. Winter residential wood and coal burning generates elevated PM2.5, while the flat Wallachian plain generally allows reasonable dispersal and cross-border industrial emissions from the Ruse side — including the Solvay chemical complex — contribute background pollution under northerly wind conditions throughout the year.
