Bistrița's air quality reflects the Bistrița river valley in the Eastern Carpathian foothills at 356 metres in northern Romania, with vehicle traffic on the DN17 and surrounding manufacturing industry contributing local sources. Winter residential wood and coal burning generates elevated PM2.5, while the surrounding Carpathian highlands create topographic variation and cold valley inversions can concentrate heating and vehicle emissions during extended winter anticyclonic periods.
