Bacău's air quality reflects its position in the Moldova river valley in northeastern Romania, with vehicle traffic on the A7 motorway and the surrounding chemical and manufacturing industry legacy from the communist era contributing elevated PM2.5 alongside winter residential coal and wood burning. The surrounding Carpathian foothills to the west and the Subcarpathian ridgelines create partial topographic enclosure, while winter temperature inversions in the Moldova valley can concentrate heating and vehicle emissions during extended anticyclonic cold periods.
