Arad's air quality reflects its position on the flat Pannonian plain near the Romanian-Hungarian border at the Mureș river crossing, with vehicle traffic on the A1 motorway and the surrounding automotive and light manufacturing industry contributing local sources. The flat Banat-Crișana plain generally allows reasonable wind dispersal on most days, while winter residential heating and temperature inversions contribute seasonal PM2.5 elevation, and Arad's western Romania position exposes it to relatively cleaner Atlantic and Pannonian airflows compared to eastern Romanian cities.
