Az̧ Z̧a'āyin's air quality reflects the flat Qatar Peninsula's eastern Al Za'ayen position adjacent to the Ras Laffan industrial corridor, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the extraordinary LNG processing — Ras Laffan hosting the world's largest LNG complex — and petrochemical operations generating elevated industrial SO₂ and VOCs alongside vehicle sources. Arabian Gulf sea breezes provide coastal ventilation, while the LNG complex's extraordinary industrial scale creates a distinctive regional background and Az Zaʼayin generally maintains moderate to elevated Qatari eastern industrial corridor readings throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Az̧ Z̧a‘āyin?

The biggest local contributors to pollution in Az̧ Z̧a‘āyin are vehicle traffic as well as heavy industrial and chemical processing, particularly once windblown dust events occur. Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels. Maritime airflow normally ventilates the area well, though calmer spells let levels rise.

Are air quality levels in Az̧ Z̧a‘āyin based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
