Lima's air quality reflects the Pacific coastal desert position in one of the world's driest capitals at 154 metres, with vehicle traffic on the Panamericana and the surrounding manufacturing and industrial corridor contributing local sources. The persistent Humboldt Current-driven coastal inversion traps all emissions year-round, while the extraordinary and unique marine stratocumulus layer creates Lima's characteristic grey garúa sky and the very stable coastal inversion makes Lima one of South America's more challenging urban air quality environments despite the coastal position.
