Quetta's air quality reflects the flat Balochistan Quetta Valley's enclosed basin at 1,680 metres surrounded by the Sulaiman and Toba Kakar mountain ranges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the vehicle density, refugee population charcoal burning, and construction corridor generating elevated PM2.5. The basin's near-complete mountain enclosure creates severe winter inversions, while the extraordinary Afghan refugee population's fuel burning compounds emissions and Quetta maintains among Pakistan's most topographically challenged major highland city environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Quetta right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Quetta is very poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 81.2/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 PM (NO2: 81.2/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Quetta?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Quetta will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at very poor at 100/100. Pollution peaks around 9:00 PM (NO2: 100/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Quetta?
Air quality in Quetta tends to be worse when road traffic, construction activity, and small-scale charcoal production build up and temperature inversions set in over the valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. Coal and wood used for winter heating add substantially to particulate levels.
Are air quality levels in Quetta based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
