Peshawar's air quality reflects the flat Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Kabul River plain at 327 metres surrounded by the Hindu Kush and Spin Ghar ranges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the vehicle density, brick kiln, and Afghan border trade corridor generating elevated PM2.5. The dry winter concentrates brick kiln and vehicle emissions, while the flat river plain's limited dispersal and the regional refugee population's charcoal burning maintain Peshawar among Pakistan's more persistently challenged major border city environments throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Peshawar right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Peshawar is very poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 90.3/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 PM (NO2: 90.3/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Peshawar?
Air quality in Peshawar tends to be worse when traffic emissions, manufacturing and food processing, and charcoal and wood-burning build up and residential heating ramps up. Fuel burned for winter heating adds an extra layer of particulates on top of other sources. This effect eases considerably during the warmer months.
Are air quality levels in Peshawar based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
