Parachinar's air quality reflects the Pakistan Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Kurram Valley's near-complete topographic enclosure at 1,733 metres surrounded by the Safed Koh and Spin Ghar ranges, with vehicle traffic and the agricultural, tribal, and border corridor contributing local sources. The severe mountain enclosure creates extreme winter inversions with residential coal and wood burning, while the Afghan border proximity and the enclosed highland character maintain moderate to elevated seasonal readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Parachinar right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Parachinar is fair. PM1 is the main pollutant at 39.0/100. Pollution peaks around 1:00 PM (O3: 56.3/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Parachinar?

When is air pollution at its worst in Parachinar?

Pollution in Parachinar typically rises when traffic on the surrounding roads, crop farming, along with wood-burning stoves combine, especially once temperature inversions set in over the valley. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. Fuel burned for winter heating adds an extra layer of particulates on top of other sources.

Are air quality levels in Parachinar based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
